After frigid start, heavy snow expected late tonight in parts of New England

We’re waking up to some of the coldest air so far this season with wind chills below zero for many, and there isn’t much relief coming for Friday afternoon.

We keep a mostly cloudy sky with temperatures stuck in the 20s — far colder than it should be for this time of the year.

By Friday evening, a push of snow moves in, first clipping western Massachusetts. We’ve marked this as a First Alert because we know a lot of people are on the move.

Christmas driver charged with OUI after going wrong way on I-95 in several communities

A driver was arrested after traveling the wrong way down a Massachusetts highway on Christmas night, allegedly under the influence of drugs.

A black Subaru Legacy was heading south on the northbound side of Interstate 95 in Newbury, according to Massachusetts State Police, who responded shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday and report that witnesses observed the wrong-way driver use Exit 83 to access Scotland Road.

Troopers activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the Subaru, but the driver allegedly traveled erratically, switched lanes, and drove in the breakdown lane, as well as on the wrong side of the road, according to police.

1 dead, 3 hospitalized in Providence fire early Christmas morning

One person has died and three others were hospitalized after a fire early Christmas morning in Providence, Rhode Island.

Crews responded around 4:45 a.m. to the fire on Princeton Street, which started in a basement and spread rapidly, according to Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva.

One victim died from their injuries after being taken to Rhode Island Hospital, while two others who were taken there are in critical condition. Another patient was hospitalized after suffering from smoke inhalation.

3 New England governors demand briefing on power project risks

Four Northeast governors on Wednesday demanded a classified briefing from the Trump administration to understand the national security risks underlying the pause on offshore wind project leases.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont and Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee also called for the pause to be lifted immediately on the five offshore wind projects, including Vineyard Wind 1 off the coast of Nantucket.

“It strains credulity to believe that vital, substantial projects that underwent many federal reviews and processes, including by the DoD (Department of Defense), all of a sudden present new, existential, unforeseen threats,” the governors wrote in a letter to U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

2 injured in Cambridge shooting

Two people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds early Christmas morning, according to police in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Police responded to a home on Howard Street for a report of a fight around 3:20 a.m.

Officers found two people shot. They were treated at the scene before being transported to area hospitals.

Stoughton police officers deliver baby in car on Christmas morning

Police officers in Stoughton, Massachusetts, delivered a baby in a car on Christmas Day.

The mother was in labor when police responded at 6:12 a.m. to Glen Echo Boulevard.

“Sergeant [Albert] Medeiros, himself a proud dad, was the first to arrive on scene,” the Stoughton Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. “Moments later, Officer [Daisy] Guzman, a mom, arrived to assist.”
