Patriots-Chargers recap: Pats defense dominates in 16-3 Wild Card win

FOXBORO – The New England Patriots entered the playoffs with the AFC’s highest-scoring offense and an MVP candidate at quarterback.

But it was their defense that delivered them a win Sunday night at Gillette Stadium.

New England held Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers to 207 total yards and zero touchdowns in a 16-3 win in the AFC Wild Card Round. The Patriots will now advance to play the winner of Texans-Steelers in the Divisional Round next Sunday.

Tracking chance of a nor'easter developing later this week

The week is off to a familiar start weather-wise — windy and cold. While we see wind chills in the teens Monday morning, the wind will back off during the afternoon while the airmass moderates a bit. Highs should reach into the upper 30s – a reasonable recovery after such a cold start.

Gradual warming is in order through midweek as we wait for Mother Nature to decide whether to develop a nor’easter or leave us with snow showers and flurries.

This is a tricky setup all around. The upper pattern would have you believe we are primed to get hit with major snow, BUT the ingredients have not come together in other parts of the atmosphere.

The Massachusetts Assisted Living Residences Commission on Monday is expected to vote on a critical report that could change how facilities are managed.

The report was fast-tracked after last summer’s deadly fire at the Gabriel House in Fall River.

The draft of the report points to some glaring issues at assisted living facilities, including cost, care and safety. The report was initially due in August, but was delayed, with the commission’s chair saying they needed more time specifically focusing on issues specifically influenced by what happened in Fall River.

Kane's Donuts makes friendly wager with Calif. donut shop over Patriots-Chargers game

Playoff fever in New England spilled over into the kitchen at Kane’s Donuts in Boston where they put their pride — and their pastries — on the line ahead of Sunday night’s Wild Card matchup between the Patriots and Chargers at Gillette Stadium.

The family-owned shop bet on their home team. The wager was: if the Patriots win, DK’s Donuts in California has to ship a dozen of their best donuts to Massachusetts. But if the Chargers dash New England’s hopes? Kane’s will overnight a dozen of their famous Honey Dip donuts out west.

“We know that’s not happening,” Maria Delios, co-owner of Kane’s, said ahead of the Patriots game Sunday night. “When the Patriots do win, they’ll be sending us a dozen of theirs and we’re looking forward to eating them because I hear they have some pretty decent donuts.”
