Good afternoon. It's Monday, Jan. 12.

In today's newsletter:

  • Former Alaska U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, said she will run against Republican U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, setting up a fight between two political heavyweights.

  • Mayor Suzanne LaFrance announced a proposal for a one-time, $12 million levy for the Anchorage School District to be placed on the ballot. In doing so, she asked the Assembly to set aside other revenue measures, including her own proposal for a 3% sales tax.

  • The Supreme Court said it will not review a lower court's decision in a case involving subsistence fishing in Alaska, a decision that keeps in place a unique federal protection viewed as critical by Alaska Natives.

At villages and camps along a Northwest Alaska river, there are a surprising number of abandoned boats, each with their own histories. In a new essay, author Seth Kantner searches for the story behind a particular forgotten boat frozen in the Ambler River.

Anchorage weather
