Stocks post small loss, closing lower for the week

After a day of whipsawing, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 closed slightly lower and posted weekly losses. The Russell 2000 beat the S&P 500 for the 11th consecutive session, the longest streak of outperformance for small caps since 2008. Chip stocks continued their rally as semiconductors also outperformed the benchmark index. Treasury yields rose as comments from President Trump lowered traders’ probabilities that known dove Kevin Hassett will become the next Fed Chair. (Event contracts are offered through Robinhood Derivatives, LLC — probabilities referenced or sourced from KalshiEx LLC or ForecastEx LLC.)

Silver slumped as strategists recommended options trades for a potential sharp pullback in silver after its recent rapid gains.

Stocks that moved higher:

  • A flurry of positive announcements, including a study and trial that showed encouraging results for non-chemo cancer treatments, made ImmunityBio the next short squeeze target for retail traders.
  • Retail favorite and satellite-services-from-space play AST SpaceMobile jumped on news that it’s signed a deal as a “prime contract awardee” for the US Department of Defense’s Golden Dome project.
  • Novo Nordisk shot higher as early data showed its prescription weight loss pill is off to "solid" start.
  • GE Vernova rose on Trump’s push to get Big Tech to fund new power plants as AI drives up electricity costs.
  • Imax rose as the Netflix CEO said the streamer would run Warner Bros. Discovery’s theatrical distribution business "largely like it is today.”
  • Rocket Lab climbed after being upgraded to overweight from equal weight by Morgan Stanley.
  • Micron rose after board member Mark Liu acquired $7.8 million worth of shares, per a new filing.
  • Riot jumped as it announced fee simple acquisition of land and first data center lease with Advanced Micro Devices at the Rockdale site.
  • Seagate Technology Holdings moved higher after being upgraded to neutral from negative by Susquehanna.

Stocks that moved lower:

  • Talen Energy, Vistra, and Constellation Energy sank on news that the Trump administration is due to announce a plan to have Big Tech pay up for new electricity.
