| | | | | Good morning, Chicago. On this date in 1986, the Bears won Super Bowl XX in New Orleans with a 46-10 victory over the Patriots. The Bears entered the game as the only team ever to record two straight playoff shutouts. With the circus invading New Orleans, there were more stories than the 26 Tribune reporters on site could wish for, Tribune reporter Don Pierson remembered. Bears coach Mike Ditka and defensive coodinator Buddy Ryan are carried around the field after they defeated New England 46-10 to win Super Bowl XX in
New Orleans on Jan. 26, 1986. (Ed Wagner/Chicago Tribune) The Bears had seven sacks and held the Patriots to seven yards rushing. But it was Bears quarterback Jim McMahon who plunged for two touchdowns and directed an offense to the 46 points that cemented Buddy Ryan’s “46” defense into football immortality. McMahon’s only regret was not defying Mike Ditka again and letting Walter Payton score the final touchdown instead
of William Perry, a mistake also regretted by Ditka and lamented by Payton more than he let on at the time. “Yes, I was surprised,” said Payton of not getting the ball in close. “Yes, I was disappointed.” A touchdown would have helped ease the memory of Payton’s fumble on the second
play of the game that set up a Patriots field goal and prompted Patriots fans to march through the New Orleans airport the next day chanting, “We scored first! We scored first!” Today’s eNewspaper edition | Subscribe to more newsletters | Asking Eric | Horoscopes | Puzzles & Games | Today in History | | | | Here’s a look at how the Chicago Bears offensive players fared in 2025, what their contract statuses are and how Ryan Poles might evaluate each position. | | | | | Chicago sports fans love their reunions — and our teams are always up for providing them. | | | | | Keaton Wagler scored a Mackey Arena opponent and Illinois freshman record 46 points in the No. 11 Illini’s 88-82 victory over No. 4 Purdue on Saturday. | | | | | Forty-eight hours after learning the Chicago Cubs would have a new starting third baseman in Alex Bregman, Matt Shaw was still digesting the move. | | | | | Photos from the Chicago Bulls retiring Derrick Rose’s jersey No. 1 on Jan. 24, 2026, at the United Center. | | | | | Derrick Rose knew he would cry long before his jersey was lofted in Saturday’s retirement ceremony, the No. 1 forever emblazoned over the Chicago Bulls court. | | | |
