In a corner of the visitors’ locker room after Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Broncos, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf allowed himself a small smile.
New England had just polished off Denver and punched its ticket to the Super Bowl. The celebration was in full swing around him. Music was pumping, players and staff were posing for pictures with the trophy, and plans were happily being made about how to best ride out the storm Sunday night.
If there was anyone who deserved a toast, it was the mild-mannered Wolf. The 43-year-old has taken plenty of slings and arrows over the last couple of years but has survived, working with a revamped front office and coaching staff to play a role in one of the most dramatic turnarounds in recent NFL history.
