Week in Review

Winter weather made its presence felt in a big way this week across Northern Virginia, bringing snow, ice, and extreme cold that disrupted schedules and created uncertainty across all programs. With travel challenges and facility limitations, many contests were rescheduled or adjusted on the fly. Through it all, our teams stayed flexible, stayed focused, and competed with resilience as they fought through a challenging week.

Both boys and girls basketball were impacted by weather-related schedule changes. Monday’s games against Alexandria City were rescheduled and played on Saturday afternoon, while the matchup against Robinson is now set for Wednesday, February 4, featuring a varsity-only doubleheader at South County. Unfortunately, lower-level contests will not be made up.

Boys Basketball earned a 72-43 win in a game that was far closer than the final score indicated. The contest was tied 35-35 at halftime, with multiple lead changes throughout the third quarter. The Stallions found another gear in the fourth quarter though, closing the game with an explosive finish to pull away late.

Girls Basketball controlled the game from start to finish, securing an 83-14 victory. Five players reached double figures in scoring, led by Laila Tull and Natalya Wooten with 17 points each. Makyah Mason delivered an outstanding all-around performance, finishing with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals.

Friday marked the opening day of the District Indoor Track Championships, and the Stallions delivered strong performances on both the boys and girls sides with several podium finishes.

  Girls Highlights

  • Mykal Mason placed 3rd in the 55m dash with a time of 7.37s, finished 2nd in the long jump at 15'4" and added a 3rd place finish in the triple jump, leaping 34'5".

  • Amiyah Curry claimed a District Championship in the high jump with a mark of 5'9" and earned 2nd place in the 300m dash with a time of 40.96s.

  • The 4x200 relay captured 1st place with a time of 1:46.91 and the 4x800 relay finished 3rd with a time of 10:00.65.

  Boys Highlights

  • Charles Brown IV won the 55m dash with a time of 6.53s and also captured 1st place in the long jump with a distance of 20'0.75".

  • The boys 4x200 relay took 1st place with a time of 1:34.42.

  • Zay McCain finished 3rd in the long jump with a mark of 19'9.5".

The Swim and Dive program competed in their District Championships on Friday with strong representation across both programs.

Diving featured its largest entry pool in five years, with 25 athletes competing on both the boys and girls sides. For the Stallion boys, Dylan Johns and Ward Gardiner both finished in the top 16 and scored valuable points for South County. On the girls side, Emma Whaley and Quinn Harris also placed in the top 16, with Quinn narrowly missing regional qualification after finishing 9th.

In swimming, the Stallions advanced 12 individual swimmers and 3 relays to the regional meet by placing in the top eight. A major highlight came from Savannah Harris, who was crowned District Champion in the 100 Butterfly with a winning time of 56.81s.

Girls Wrestling travelled to Hayfield on Friday and Saturday for the Zone Qualifier Tournament and while every member of the team earned at least one win for the Stallions,  the highlight was Libby Drake's strong performance to finish 6th in the 107lb weight class and is now an alternate for the upcoming state meet.

One-Acts Shines

One Acts Team

The South County One-Acts team traveled to West Springfield on Friday to compete in their district competition, presenting a powerful interpretation of Medea by Euripides. The ancient Greek tragedy tells the story of Medea, a woman betrayed by her husband Jason, and explores themes of loyalty, revenge, and the consequences of unchecked pride and betrayal.

The group’s hard work and commitment paid off with a 3rd place finish in a highly competitive field, with fewer than 40 points separating 1st place from 5th place overall.  This also qualifies them for a spot in the upcoming regional competition. In addition to the strong team performance, Maya Wade was recognized with a bronze medal, honoring her as the third best individual performer across all programs. An outstanding showing by our Stallion artists on a big stage!
