Preparing for Winter Weather

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.

Winter Resources for Families

A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Attendance Matters!

In Virginia, all children starting at age five (5) are required to attend school regularly. North Springfield ES staff must record student attendance every day school is in session.

All absences, whether excused and unexcused, count toward chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is missing more than ten percent, or 18 days, of the full school year. Attention to student attendance and active efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism is part of the new VDOE accreditation rating process for our school.

NSES staff can help children do their best learning when they are with us in school! Families can help by:

Planning vacations or trips on days in which there is already no school schedule.
Having your child attend school before or after any appointments, such as a doctor or dentist visit.
Support your child in healthy practices, such as hand-washing, using tissue, covering coughs, eating healthy foods and getting a full-night's sleep.
Keeping children at home if they are sick with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Also, please keep children home if they are contagious with pink eye, rash or strep throat. This allows your child to get better and keeps others from getting sick.

It's Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten program helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.
