Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Families,

We are excited for our students' return to school this week, and I am happy to report that our campus is in great shape to receive them. Our facilities teams and custodians worked throughout the weekend and today to ensure our students can get to school safely and get back to learning. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Paul Osei Akrasi and his entire custodial team, along with FCPS facilities, for their tireless hard work.

As we prepare for tomorrow, please be aware of a few logistical items to make the return to school as safe as possible. One of our remaining challenges is the loss of several parking spaces in our main lot, as well as the loss of almost all parking along Whitacre and Pickett roads. Because of this, we ask that you arrive earlier than usual. We are expecting longer lines in our "Kiss and Ride" as well as slower traffic movement; arriving just five to ten minutes earlier will have a huge impact. To assist with this, Door 1 and Door 10 will open at 9:15 AM tomorrow to allow for earlier drop-offs.

Regarding our academic calendar, please note that with the additional day off, the last day of the second quarter has been moved to Wednesday, February 4. This change will allow for one more "odd and even" day rotation for teachers and students to successfully finish out the quarter.

Even while we have been away from the classroom, our students have continued to excel in competition. This past weekend, our Girls’ Swim and Dive team won the Patriot District Championship! Additionally, our Theater Department won the Patriot District One-Act title for their performance of A Piece of My Heart.

With districts on the horizon for many of our athletes, I also want to congratulate our two girl wrestlers who qualified for the state competition this past weekend. Dani Hyder took 1st place in the zone qualifier and Nimmar Al-Qudwa Al-Hussieni took 3rd place!  Congratulations to Shannon Close, who qualified as an alternate for the state competition.

Looking forward, we are excited to host International Night this week. This event will include both a potluck dinner and a performance showcase; it is always a wonderful evening, and we cannot wait to see our students' talents on display. Please check the information included below for more details and buy your tickets here.

For all other upcoming activities, you can stay updated at woodsonsports.com

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the halls of Carter G. Woodson High School. Have a great week!

FCPS Offers Take-Home Meal Kits for Fasting Students

FCPS is offering take-home meal kits from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, March 19, 2026 to support students who are fasting during the school day.

Thanks to a program from the Virginia Department of Education, students can now take healthy school meal kits home at the end of the day. These kits are designed to be eaten later that day and include both breakfast and lunch.

Families must fill out a meal kit request form on the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) website for each student, every week. Because these meals are prepared fresh, we cannot accept late requests.

Submit a fasting meal kit request form by these deadlines:

  • By Wednesday, February 11, 2026 for the week of February 18, 2026
  • By Monday, February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
  • By Monday, February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
  • By Monday, March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
  • By Monday, March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

International Night

Saturday, February 7th

Woodson’s annual International Night will take place on Saturday, February 7th. There will be a pre-show potluck from 4:30-5:30 in both cafeterias, followed by a fashion show and performances in the auditorium beginning at 6:00.

We are looking for parents and students to bring/make food for the potluck. This is a great opportunity to get to know other parents and showcase grandma’s famous cooking. Sign up here for the potluck. Please plan to help with the distribution of the food at your table. Extension cords will be available if you need to plug in crock pots to keep the dish warm.  Students contributing will earn 1 community service hour for every 15 servings of food donated with a maximum of 3 hours.

Tickets for both potluck and the show can be purchased online with this link on Etix for $10.

If you have any questions contact Ms. Annie Hadfield at eahadfield@fcps.edu or Mr. Lee Hedrick at lrhedick@fcps.edu

Student Services Information

Counselor Corner

We hope everyone is staying warm and look forward to seeing students very soon! We recently hosted Curriculum Night as we prepare to see all 9th -11th graders for Academic Advising. If you need to refresh or if you missed the presentation, you can find it, along with a wealth of other information on course selection for next year, on both our Academic Advising website as well as the Student Services Academic Advising padlet.

To deliver pre-Advising lessons, we have been visiting Frost social studies and Woodson math classes to share important information regarding how to prepare for individual academic advising meetings. Every student will have their own meeting with their counselor. To prepare for those meetings, students could create a google doc and add their questions to discuss at their meeting.

The academy registration deadline is March 6. Any student interested in taking an academy class next year should complete the google form posted in Schoology or email their counselor if they have not already done so.

The Academic Advising website and Academic Advising padlet have important resources, including course selection sheets, graduation requirements, and information on FCPS Academy, Online Campus, Summer Learning, and Dual Enrollment classes. Please bookmark these sites and refer back to them as needed.

Seniors! Mid-year transcripts will be sent by February 13. There is no need to add a new request, as they are automatically submitted. Take care and stay warm!

Graduation Status Now Available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE

A new Graduation Status section is now available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. The Graduation Status is a tool that helps parents and students monitor and track their progress in meeting graduation requirements. This feature includes progress towards the Standard or Advanced Studies diploma for high school students and middle school students who have enrolled in one or more high school courses.

This new graduation status section is available in addition to the course history and unofficial transcript options in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. To view the graduation status section, please take the following steps:

  1. Login to your SIS ParentVUE Account
  2. Go to “Course History” for your middle or high school student
  3. Go to “Graduation Status” and toggle “on”

For your awareness, in some cases, the Graduation Status section may flag a graduation requirement as having not been met yet when in fact the student has met the requirement or is currently enrolled in a course that will fulfill the requirement. Please know that school counselors review graduation requirements yearly with students during academic advising and help ensure that all students are in classes they need to remain on track to graduate on time. Students will have the opportunity to review any questions or concerns about their graduation status in February/March when they meet with their counselor for academic advising.

For general questions about graduation requirements, please review the information from on the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. You are welcome to contact your child's school counselor at any time as well.

Additional information about ParentVUE is available HERE.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
