Good afternoon. It's Monday, Feb. 2.

In today's newsletter:

  • Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has asked Anchorage's assessor's office to review properties with "unusually" high value increases after changes to the city's property tax assessment process caused large swings in many assessed home values.

  • Half of the Anchorage Assembly is up for election in April, and so are two school board seats. Here's a look at the candidates running for each seat.

  • The Alaska House of Representatives' ethics committee has launched an investigation into whether a Homer Republican illegally used state resources when she successfully pushed the local newspaper to remove and revise a story.

The life of one of the most remote grizzly bear populations in the world is being documented by the animals themselves as part of a research project by Washington State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Twelve of the 200 or so grizzlies that roam Alaska's North Slope have been outfitted with collar cameras that provide researchers a rare glimpse into how the bears survive.

Anchorage weather

It's partly sunny today with a high around 32 degrees. Looking ahead, the forecast calls for a wintry mix of precipitation on Tuesday, followed by mostly cloudy skies on Wednesday. Daytime temperatures will range from the low to mid-30s through the rest of this week.
