Housing Vacancies and Homeownership

02/03/2026 10:00 AM EST

Homeownership Rate**

4th Qtr 2025: 65.7*

4th Qtr 2024: 65.7

The homeownership rate of 65.7 percent was virtually the same as the rate in the fourth quarter 2024. The homeownership rate in the Northeast was higher than the rate in the fourth quarter 2024, while the rates in the Midwest, South, and West were not statistically different from fourth quarter 2024 rates.

Rental Vacancy Rate**

4th Qtr 2025: 7.2*

4th Qtr 2024: 6.9

The rental vacancy rate was not statistically different from the rate in the fourth quarter 2024. The rental vacancy rate in the Northeast was higher than the fourth quarter 2024 rate, while the rates in the Midwest, South, and West were not statistically different from fourth quarter 2024 rates.

(**) Due to a lapse in federal funding, the Current Population Survey/Housing Vacancy Survey (CPS/HVS) did not collect data for the month of October 2025. The fourth quarter 2025 HVS estimates are therefore based only on data from November 2025 and December 2025. Data users should be aware of the time period difference when working with the fourth quarter 2025 estimates and take note of the margins of error, which reflect the higher level of uncertainty for the fourth quarter 2025 estimates.

(*)The 90% confidence interval includes zero. The Census Bureau does not have sufficient statistical evidence to conclude that the actual change is different from zero. (°) Statistical significance is not applicable or not measurable for these surveys. The Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders estimates are not based on a probability sample, so we can neither measure the sampling error of these estimates nor compute confidence intervals. (r) Revised. All estimates are seasonally adjusted except for the Rental Vacancy Rate, Home Ownership Rate, Quarterly Financial Report for Retail Trade, and Quarterly Services Survey. None of the estimates are adjusted for price changes.
