Moody Gardens is working with Galveston Bay Foundation on a project to mitigate shoreline erosion at the golf course. Using shells we've collected through the Galveston Bay Foundation's Oyster Shell Recycling Program, we are creating oyster shell bags. These bags are made of a mesh material. These bags will eventually be taken to the golf course and placed in the water. For this project, we will need to make about 2,000 bags, each about 20” x 11” in size. The completed bags will weigh approximately 30 pounds so there may be some heavy lifting involved.
We would like to have Moody Gardens & Galveston Bay Foundation volunteers to help with this project. We are hosting seven workdays to create the bags. Each day will be from 8:45 am to 12 pm, in the back of the west lot. We will have a tent set up for shade and all provided supplies; this will also include gloves. Volunteers would need to wear closed-toe shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. They should also plan to bring a refillable water bottle, a hat, and sunscreen. We will provide water to refill bottles.
