Garrett Whitlock walked out of the Red Sox clubhouse Wednesday morning and surveyed a group of fellow pitchers playing catch.
“We’ve got a bunch of arms this year,” the righthander said. “It’s impressive.”
By that he means pitchers the opponent won’t want to face, not just some random tall guy who will struggle to get through five innings.
Whitlock’s opinion carries weight. He lives only a few minutes from Fenway South and has been working out at the facility since last season ended with a playoff loss against the Yankees. Whitlock has watched with interest as the Sox added Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, and Ranger Suárez to a starting rotation headed up by Garrett Crochet, who finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting.
