| | | | | BY MEG WINGERTER Five weeks into the year, the country's measles case count is about one-third of the way to last year's total, which was the highest since 1991. As of Thursday, the CDC showed 733 cases, with the majority in South Carolina. Last year, 2,276 got measles, 246 had to be hospitalized and three died. So far, there's no sign the rate of new cases is slowing down. So far, Colorado doesn't have any cases, though I think that's unlikely to continue all year, given the number of travel destinations with ongoing spread. In addition to South Carolina, public health officials have identified an outbreak at a university in Florida, a smattering of cases at a detention center and the general community in west Texas and exposures at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. | | | | The Trump administration plans to rescind $600 million in public health funds from four states led by Democrats because it finds the grants “inconsistent with agency priorities.” | | | | | A leading U.S. health official on Sunday urged people to get inoculated against the measles at a time of outbreaks across several states and as the United States is at risk of losing its measles elimination status. | | | | | Many hospitals refuse to provide information or allow contact with these patients. | | | | | Under the proposal, people buying groceries in Colorado couldn’t use SNAP to pay for drinks containing sugar or artificial sweeteners, unless they contained milk, a milk substitute, or at least 50% juice. | | | | | Economic conditions and uncertainty continue to impact childbearing decisions. | | | | | The actual savings for consumers remain unclear. | | | |
