Hi Adam,
Thank you again to everyone who joined our CKD nutrition classes — the engagement and thoughtful questions were truly energizing.
Your time is valuable, and we wanted to make sure that we made this valuable too! Clear information and our belief that nutrition is a real solution for kidney disease.
A few key nutrient highlights:
1️⃣Protein: There’s no single “right” amount. For many people with CKD, protein needs often fall around 0.6–0.8 g/kg, but the right target depends on your labs, CKD stage, age, activity level, and overall health.
2️⃣Potassium: Most people do not need to restrict potassium unless blood levels are elevated. Potassium doesn’t hurt your kidneys! We see all the time that some people definitely struggle with high potassium because of their blood pressure meds. But for those who don’t have high potassium in their labs - potassium is actually helpful for controlling blood pressure.
3️⃣Phosphorus: The source matters more than the number. Phosphorus from whole foods is absorbed much less than phosphorus additives in processed foods, which is why food quality is so important.
The big picture takeaway:
A plant-dominant (PLADO) framework is powerful. And it works with potassium restriction (if you need it) and phosphorus management too.
PLADO supports blood pressure, heart health, gut health, acid–base balance, and metabolic health, and reduces unnecessary kidney stress. It’s not about perfection or restriction, but about putting the pieces together in a way that actually works long term.
And this is where many people get stuck.
They understand the concepts…
but translating them into everyday meals, habits, and decisions for their specific situation feels overwhelming.
