Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Families,

As we enjoy the President’s Day holiday, I want to wish everyone a restful and restorative long weekend. Please keep in mind that we have a short week ahead, but while the days may be fewer, they are certainly not lacking in excitement and achievement. As a reminder, there is no school for students tomorrow, Tuesday the 17th.

Our campus is buzzing with energy as we enter the heart of the postseason. This Thursday, both our Girls and Boys Basketball teams continue their journey in the district tournament. We are anticipating a strong showing, and with victories on Thursday, our student-athletes will advance to play again this Friday. We encourage everyone to come out and cheer our teams on toward a championship!

Our Theater department is also competing in their regional competition this Saturday, February 21st, at 1:15 pm.  Their district winning play, A Piece of my Heart, will be performed at Fairfax High School this Saturday!

In the classroom and beyond, our students continue to push the boundaries of innovation. I am thrilled to announce the results of the "Seize the Moment" Student AI Challenge. Taking 1st Place at the school level is Joelle Rice, who developed an extraordinary app called Genetic Guard. By utilizing ClinVar and Alpha Missense, Joelle’s project predicts the risk of variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in genetic testing. This specialization in TP53 empowers patients and contributes to the vital work of pediatric cancer prevention. Joelle will move on to showcase this project at the district level, and we invite you all to check out the app and witness this incredible work firsthand.

We also want to celebrate our other high-achieving finalists. TaskMaster, our 2nd Place winner, offers an AI-based planner that intelligently adjusts schedules based on assignment difficulty. Our 3rd Place entry, PeerConnect, provides a fluid interface for school-wide networking, streamlining club collaborations and service projects. These students have shown remarkable insight into optimizing the social and organizational aspects of high school life.

We look forward to welcoming musicians from across our pyramid this weekend with our annual Stringapalooza on Saturday. This event is a beloved tradition that brings our community together through the power of music, and we look forward to a wonderful day together.

Finally, as we look toward the diverse traditions that enrich our school family, we wish a Happy Lunar New Year to those celebrating, and a meaningful Ash Wednesday to those in our community beginning the Lenten season. We also wish a peaceful start of Ramadan to all our families observing the holy month.

Have a great week Woodson!

FCPS Offers Take-Home Meal Kits for Fasting Students

FCPS is offering take-home meal kits from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, March 19, 2026 to support students who are fasting during the school day.

Thanks to a program from the Virginia Department of Education, students can now take healthy school meal kits home at the end of the day. These kits are designed to be eaten later that day and include both breakfast and lunch.

Families must fill out a meal kit request form on the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) website for each student, every week. Because these meals are prepared fresh, we cannot accept late requests.

Submit a fasting meal kit request form by these deadlines:

  • By Wednesday, February 11, 2026 for the week of February 18, 2026
  • By Monday, February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
  • By Monday, February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
  • By Monday, March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
  • By Monday, March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Student Services Information

Counselor Corner

Counselors met with rising seniors for Academic Advising over the last two weeks. We begin seeing rising juniors on Wednesday. We will automatically call in any student missed due to the shortened days or those who were absent; there is no need to request a meeting. To prepare for our meetings, course selection forms and other helpful and important information can be found on our Academic Advising padlet

We continue our student meetings for Advising through March 16. We are directing students to grade level padlets (Junior, Sophomore, Freshman) for college & career planning resources. A valuable resource for rising seniors is our Next Steps document which guides students to take the needed steps to reach their goals, no matter their post-secondary plans, whether it be college, technical school, military or workforce. College-bound students can download the Application Tracker to start organizing their colleges list and application components. Remember to enter admissions risk per college so you have a balanced list. We are giving every junior an Opportunities college planning guide. We are excited for Junior Focus Day on April 7th. Rising seniors will choose 3 sessions to help them with post-secondary planning. Stay tuned for details, but mark your calendars!

Speaking of seniors, we will send mid-year reports no later than 2/13/26. No need to request, we automatically send them! If you receive emails from your colleges, they understand the transcripts are on their way.

Thank you to our amazing community for celebrating us during National School Counselor Week! We care deeply about the work we do and seek to provide a positive impact on the emotional and academic wellness of each and every Woodson student. Helping to put the pieces together for students seeking to take their next steps in life is a genuine privilege and we take pride in being a safe place and guiding light in that endeavor.

Academic Advising Updates

Last week, school counselors began holding individual meetings with 11th graders for them to select classes for next year. Counselors will continue to meet with juniors through history classes until February 18th. Counselors will then meet with 10th graders through English classes between February 18th and March 2nd, and then with 9th graders through science classes between March 3rd and March 16th. If your child is absent on the day of their scheduled meeting with their counselor, their counselor will schedule another time to meet with them in the coming days. Every student will be seen and will have the opportunity to select classes for next year.

During this time, we encourage parents at home to review their child’s planned course selections with them. There is a wealth of information available on the Woodson HS Academic Advising website, as well as the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. Counselors have spoken with students about making informed decisions when it comes to selecting classes for next year, so please utilize the information on these sites to get informed so that your child can make the best course selections for themselves for next school year.

After counselors complete seeing students in each grade level, the Student Services office will send individual emails to parents with a list of their child’s course selections for review. This information can also be in found in both SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE under the Course Selections tab. Please be sure to review your child’s course selections for next year after they meet with their counselor. Any course request change must be submitted to your child’s school counselor by Friday, March 27th. Please know that changes will be accommodated on a space available basis and change requests are not guaranteed.

Thank you for your support and partnership during academic advising!
