| Good morning, Chicago. This morning we heard that the Rev. Jesse Jackson passed away at 84. Read the Tribune Editorial Board’s reflections of this formidable man below. We’re getting closer to that time when everyone wants to pretend to be Irish for a day. (I don’t have to fake it, though, thanks to my Celtic ancestry.) Chicago has strong Irish roots, but I have to admit I was surprised to
find out that Chicago helped the world take notice of Ireland as an independent country thanks to the platform our city provided. And that was due to the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago, which invited the nascent nation’s first president to speak to an audience here. Two diplomats today offer us a lesson on that history as the club celebrates its 125th anniversary. Also in commentary, an interfaith educator eloquently explains the public purpose inherent in Muslims’ observation of Ramadan, which starts this week, and a California professor argues that what we need to cut Donald Trump to size is a Joseph McCarthy-type takedown that resuscitates the national desire for decency. The Tribune Editorial Board offers more endorsements as the March primary approaches — this time, for Illinois House Districts 94, 107, 109, 116 and 118 as well as for comptroller and secretary of state. And in letters, a teen admits to the fear he feels over the events in our country but realizes he still has power as a citizen to work toward change. Be sure not to skip it. Must I goad you into getting outside this week to enjoy the temperate air? It’s a preview of the glorious spring to come.
