Good afternoon. It's Monday, Feb. 23.

In today's newsletter:

  • Anchorage voters will consider a series of ballot proposals in April's election including more than $155 million in bonds and tax levy propositions. Here's a look at what those proposals would do.

  • The Alaska House is poised to vote this week on whether to approve nearly $500 million in state funding to cover expenditures in the current fiscal year, amid opposition from House Republicans.

  • Anchorage School Board members will vote on the district's budget on Tuesday, but the financial situation for next school year could still change after members cast their votes.

For the last few months, food writer Julia O'Malley has been testing somewhat outrageous doctored cake mix recipes for an event at the Anchorage Museum. It looks at the evolution of cake recipes in Alaska as a way to see how the Cold War era changed how women baked, and saw themselves. The "Better Than Tom Selleck" cake, featuring coconut and canned pineapple, is her favorite.

Anchorage weather

It's partly sunny today with a high around 31 degrees. Looking ahead to the rest of this week, the forecast calls for a wintry mix of precipitation overnight into Tuesday, followed by partly to mostly sunny skies. Daytime highs will drop significantly starting Wednesday, hovering in the single digits for several days.

Here's what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
