But sometimes they bring a community together in ways almost nothing else can.
Last night, Rhode Island's hockey community came together for the Division II semifinals, to watch the Blackstone Valley Schools Co-op play against Portsmouth.
Just weeks earlier, the Blackstone team was rocked by tragedy when one of its players lost his mother, brother, and grandfather in a tragic shooting inside the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the rink.
On Wednesday, that player scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to send Blackstone Valley Schools Co-op to the Division II championship game. (The Globe does not name juvenile victims without permission.)
The moment – and the reaction inside the rink – is something you have to see.
And listen to the call from Nick Coit, who captures it perfectly.
