Stepping into spring
It is nearly the start of spring in the northern hemisphere, and the dreary cold is retreating. Or at least we hope it is. For now it is still "Definitely the Wrong Jacket" season. You can't quite win, but lighter times are ahead. Hopefully not just literally.
Apple has caused quite the stir with the release of their new MacBook Neo. As a millennial who firmly believes that some things just need to be done on a big screen “proper” device, I find it both surprising and awe-inducing that we can now run a laptop on the same class of chip that powers our phones. A week after launch, the first performance reports are starting to appear: MacRumors has released Neo’s first benchmarks, and John Gruber explores where this new MacBook fits within the Apple ecosystem and beyond.
Meanwhile, over in the Android world Google has announced updates to their Play Store as a response to the Fortnite lawsuit. App stores are ever-evolving beasts that developers have to keep up with. Google's update promises some better options for Android developers, including lower fees, alternative billing systems and a more flexible distribution model.
And of course AI continues to get more integrated in our development workflows. Both Xcode and Android Studio now include agentic AI capabilities that promise to speed up development. The key, however, is knowing how to use these tools effectively.
That is great news for you, as we are releasing new content around exactly these topics. We'll have materials on Xcode and agentic development coming out soon, and we've published the Practical Android AI book earlier this month! It offers hands-on guidance on how to utilise AI in your Android development workflows, including helping you understand the differences of cloud-based and on-device models, and when each approach makes sense. The book is available for purchase, or you can read it for free with a Kodeco subscription. If you are not sure whether it is the right fit for you, the first two chapters are free for everyone to read.
