Good afternoon. It's Thursday, March 12.

In today's newsletter:

  • The state Senate voted to advance a spending bill that adds $373 million to the current year's budget. Unexpectedly high oil prices, driven by the war in Iran, are set to bring in tens of millions of dollars in additional revenue to the state.

  • Two of Alaska's largest utilities told state regulators this week why they support separate projects to import natural gas, amid concerns that two competing plants will be excessive and boost customer costs.

  • Alaska House minority Republicans sought to reprimand an Anchorage Democrat for holding up a sign protesting ICE during a speech by Alaska's lone U.S. House member. The effort was ultimately unsuccessful.

At the same time, certain foods and drinks — from chamomile tea to a turkey sandwich — have a well-earned reputation for making us sleepy. These eating patterns, over time, should help you achieve better sleep, a growing body of research shows.

Anchorage weather

This week's sunny streak continues, with clear skies today and a high around 14 degrees. Friday will be mostly sunny, but the forecast calls for increasing clouds over the weekend and a chance of snow on Saturday night. Daytime temperatures will briefly climb back into the low 20s on Sunday.

Here's what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
