The Red Sox break camp on March 24, so time is running out for players to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Not that there has been much competition anyway. Other than second base and a few spots on the bench and in the bullpen, the roster has been largely cemented since the Feb. 9 trade with the Brewers that brought in Caleb Durbin.
In our latest roster projection, Marcelo Mayer is back in the lineup as the second baseman after finally getting some at-bats and regaining the faith of manager Alex Cora.
Cora has said he wants Durbin to settle in at one position, and he’s been playing third regularly. That shifts Mayer to second, where he has looked sharp defensively.
