Central Queensland is traditionally a rugby league nursery and our region is set to celebrate its rich history with a special visit.
In a massive coup for the CQ region, Rockhampton's newly upgraded Browne Park will host the Queensland Maroons' regional fan day on Tuesday, June 30.
The Maroons have a long and proud history of connecting with regional Queensland communities during their State of Origin campaign, having engaged with fans in Gympie, Toowoomba, Cairns and Warwick in recent years.
Former Origin great Steve Price, now the Queensland Rugby League's Central region manager, spoke to ABC Capricornia Breakfast about why Rockhampton was chosen as this year's fan day venue.
The Maroons legend told presenter Karyn Wilson that the Beef Capital had always been a heartland for rugby league.
As a footy fan myself, Rockhampton's deep rugby league heritage makes it a fitting host city.
It is the hometown of Maroons captain Cameron Munster, who first developed his rugby league skills with the Norths Knights juniors.
The wider Central Queensland region has also produced numerous Maroons State of Origin stars, including Harry Grant (Yeppoon Seagulls) and Ben Hunt (Blackwater Crushers).
Fittingly, the news this week was delivered in Rockhampton on the home turf of the Knights.
Could this be an omen for Munster and the Maroons ahead of this year's Origin series against New South Wales?
Have a great week and remember, if you have a story idea drop an email to Rockhampton.Regional@abc.net.au and make sure you like our ABC Capricornia Facebook page for links to all of our stories.
