I’m so glad Robyn’s back. Sexistential, her first album in eight years, shows she hasn’t lost her edge or sense of humor. (The title track, a club banger, begins its second verse, “I've been on Raya while on IVF / PTSD from all the tests / Hormonal rants on IG / Scrolling my feed while breastfeeding.” She became an undeniably cool mom a few years ago.) My favorite song changes from day to day, but as of now, I’m a big fan of the minimalist “Blow My Mind,” a reimagining of her 2002 song of the same name; it sounds like Prince meets Kraftwerk, with a pinch of Zapp. – Aisha Harris
More music for your weekend listening: Courtney Barnett's new album, Creature of Habit. Her 2021 album Things Take Time, Take Time has been in my regular rotation since it came out. Her new one takes stock of where she is and where she's going, even if there are no clear answers. She floats through feelings of ambivalence — being ready for change but feeling stuck, yet shirking advice because she knows what she wants. But relishing the moment and making moves are never mutually exclusive in her lyrics; the questions she circles around don't feel daunting, but hopeful. This afternoon when I slam the laptop shut I'll be pressing play on "Mantis": "I am exercising how good it feels to be alive." – Editor Clare Lombardo |
