I’m currently in one of those blissful periods when all I can think about is my upcoming trip. This month is my very first visit to Hawai‘i.
Being in my line of work, I’ve read more about Hawai‘i than the average person who’s never been. Much like the average person, I know the beaches are divine, and the surfing is unmatched. But I also know Hawai‘i has a complicated relationship with tourism, which too often mirrors its colonial past. Many Hawaiian natives are working to raise awareness of this among travelers, aiming to design a more authentic and sustainable future for the travel industry.
Photographer Nathan Cyprys embarked on a 2-week road trip across Hawai‘i’s Big Island. It was his first time visiting and photographing Hawai‘i, and he chose to document the journey for Lonely Planet using a large-format 4x5 film camera. Responsible travel was a recurring theme throughout his journey.
Revel in his stunning photographs with me, while also learning how we can behave responsibly as tourists in Hawai‘i.
