Good afternoon. It’s Wednesday, April 15.

In today's newsletter:

  • The Alaska Senate Education Committee replaced a school funding bill introduced in March with a new version that strips out a controversial overhaul of publicly funded homeschooling programs.

  • Anchorage police say officers shot an armed man suspected of vehicle theft in Midtown multiple times early this morning after he fired at them during a foot pursuit.

  • Anchorage Assembly Midtown candidate Janice Park paced ahead of opponent Dave Donley by just 47 votes on Tuesday, within the margin that is likely to trigger an automatic recount.

Summer is on the horizon, promising lazy days and warm nights and, almost certainly, higher prices than you’d like to pay for vacation. But if you know where to look, there are plenty of ways to avoid crowds and save money on your next trip. From where to go to when to buy tickets (uh, probably now), these travel writers have you covered for an easier, breezier holiday.
