Mustang Memo 4.24.26
Save the Date - SOL Testing in May
testing calendar

Note from Dr. Sheers

As we approach the spring assessment season, students will participate in a variety of evaluations aligned to their grade level and courses. These include summative assessments such as the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what students have learned, and growth assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), which help us understand where students are in their learning journey.

Fairfax County Public Schools strongly encourages all students to participate in these assessments. In Virginia, schools are required to test at least 95% of eligible students on SOL assessments. When participation falls below this threshold, it can directly affect a school’s accreditation status, accountability ratings, and our ability to accurately measure and respond to student learning needs.

Family support plays a key role in student success. You can help by ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives at school on time. Please also remember that the school division’s cell phone policy remains in effect during testing.

It is important that students are present on their scheduled testing dates. If your family is aware of a conflict, please contact your child’s school as soon as possible so we can make appropriate arrangements.

Thank you for partnering with us to support student success. To learn more about how you can help your child and why participation in testing matters, please visit the FCPS website.

Help FCPS Sustain Excellence: Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are several upcoming opportunities to provide feedback to the county on its budget before final adoption in May. School Lunch Hero Day

On May 1, 2026 we will join the Office of Food and Nutrition Services to celebrate School Lunch Hero Day to honor those who prepare and serve meals to our students. You will find coloring pages in your student’s Thursday folder.   If your child wishes to participate, have them color the page and then send it back to their teacher by April 29.  We will decorate the cafeteria with all the coloring pages to show the staff our appreciation.  To learn more and access more resources please go here

Halfway Through Journeys and Themes in Language Arts

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored stories involving quests, challenges, and problem-solving.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: Which character has been your favorite from this unit and why?
  • Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level.

Volunteer with Us!

The new volunteer management system, Volunteer FCPS, allows individuals to search and register for volunteer opportunities at our school or across the school district.

Volunteer FCPS is how FCPS provides a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. Anyone interested in volunteering with FCPS must:

  • Create a profile in Volunteer FCPS.
  • Register for opportunities through Volunteer FCPS.
  • Sign in and out of schools using the visitor kiosk on EVERY visit – no exceptions.

Get Ready for Field Day! (Volunteers Needed)

It’s almost time for the most high-energy day of the school year - Field Day! On Friday, May 29nd, our students will be heading outside for relay races, games, and plenty of school spirit.

To make this day a "win" for everyone, we need a team of enthusiastic parent volunteers to help us manage stations and keep the fun moving. Whether you're a pro at officiating or just great at cheering, we have a spot for you!
