I love a fun heist movie, and Fuze, which is out in theaters now, fits the bill. A twisty thriller from director David Mackenzie (who also did the excellent Hell or High Water), it begins with the evacuation of London following the unearthing of a World War II-era bomb at a construction site in the center of the city. As a team of specialists and security forces focus on trying to diffuse the bomb, a group of jewel thieves use the opportunity to carry out a job. It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Sam Worthington, Theo James, and (a woefully underused) Gugu Mbatha-Raw star, and it’s got a tight, unpredictable script with adrenaline for days. — Aisha Harris
In Darwin's Paradox!, a fun, cartoony little puzzle/platformer available on most gaming systems, you're a cute li'l octopus just trying to get home to the sea. The world you find yourself in, however, is a harsh and unforgiving one, and you're gonna need your special set of cephalopod skills to stay alive — including but not limited to swimming, sticking to surfaces, shooting ink and camouflaging yourself. You'll make it through in a matter of hours, but the game constantly switches up the mechanics to keep things interesting, which introduces fun trade-offs: Those rats in the sewers always eating you? Don't worry — just take a dip in some radioactive goo! It'll light your way in dark tunnels and keep the rodents at bay — but! The goo doesn't last forever, and while you're covered in it, you won't be able to climb anything. Some frustration sets in as you keep dying — basic platformer stuff. But the design, both artistic and mechanical, makes this a great, breezy pick-up-and-play option for when you need a break from heavier fare. — Glen Weldon |
