Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update!
Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 29, which was previously an early release Wednesday at Hayfield Elementary.
Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, we will share copies with you directly.
For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.
Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests occur in reading, mathematics, and science. See below for the schedule of grade level SOLs.

 Wednesday May 6, 2026 | Hayfield Park | Meet at 7:45 a.m.
Join HES staff and students to bike to school this Spring in our community! Why Bike or Roll? It’s fun! Remember the thrill of riding a bike for the first time? There’s a feeling of joy and independence. A sense of adventure that doesn’t fade. Of course, there are many other benefits to walking, biking or rolling to school, too.
- Healthier Habits
- Cleaner Environment
- Promoting Safety
- Community Benefits - less traffic congestion, stronger sense of community, safer streets, lower costs, improved accessibility.
The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th grade each school year.
All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 to 12 or as early as 9 years old.
- As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.
Immunization Events for FCPS Students
FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.
Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input (Optional) for Current K-5 Students or New Students for Next Year – Due Friday, May 8
As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, Hayfield Elementary staff will be creating tentative class groupings this spring. Final classroom assignments will be shared in mid-August.
In developing class placements, we carefully consider a variety of factors, including:
- Individual student information
- Teacher input
- Social relationships
- A balanced mix of students with diverse needs, personalities, and learning styles
Due to the many variables involved in building well-balanced classrooms—including staffing considerations—we are unable to accommodate requests for specific teachers.
If there is information you would like us to consider regarding your child’s placement, please complete this form by Friday, May 8, at 4:00 PM. If you do not have additional input to share, there is no need to complete the form. https://forms.gle/JEaerGrBDU5vGxGj6.
Note: To keep the process organized, this form is the only way to submit parent input, as we cannot accept individual emails regarding class placement.
Our goal is to create supportive, well-rounded classroom communities where all students can thrive.
Best, Dr. Tempel-Milner and Mr. O’Connor
All volunteers are required to be registered. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
Volunteer Opportunities at Hayfield Elementary:
With Spring Field Trips coming up, we need to make sure all chaperones are registered in the Volunteer FCPS system. There have been some changes to the requirements of volunteers. Field Trip volunteers should select Level 2.
For opportunity specific questions about the Volunteer FCPS registration process please email mgrotz@fcps.edu.
