April 24 - News and Notes!
Dear Rolling Valley Families,
We had a wonderful week celebrating Earth Week, thanks to the thoughtful planning of Ms. Marsala and Mrs. Milian. Our students engaged in a variety of hands-on experiences, including our first N.E.S.T. event, where students across the school participated in an hour of outdoor, eco-friendly activities. It was a meaningful opportunity to come together as a school community through nature exploration, environmental stewardship, and shared outdoor learning.
Our culminating activity, the “lambmowers,” exceeded all expectations. The day was filled with smiles, laughter, and memorable moments for students and staff alike. To capture the excitement of this unique experience, Fox 5 visited Rolling Valley to highlight this special event.
In addition to Earth Week activities, students enjoyed an author visit from Josh Funk and our Robotic Club members participated in a Robotics Competition led by Ms. Williams. Even with a shorter four-day week, it was incredible to see how much our students experienced and accomplished.
We are looking forward to another fun-filled week ahead. Please be sure to review the important dates below for upcoming activities.

Full-Time AAP Orientation
Families,
We know some of you are in the process of determining the best placement to meet your students’ advanced academic needs for next school year (Local Full-Time AAP, center-based Full-Time AAP, or deferring Full-Time AAP services and accessing Part-Time AAP services instead).
To help you determine what is best for your student, schools where your student can access Full-Time AAP services hold orientations to provide information on more school-specific topics.
Our school, Rolling Valley Elementary, will hold an orientation on Thursday, April 30, from 5:30- 6:30 pm in the library. We will explain how we implement our Full Time Advanced Academics plan, and the unique and exciting opportunities we offer our students at Rolling Valley. You will have a chance to meet some of the staff and ask more personalized questions.
We look forward to meeting with you! Please reach out to Krystyn Carey with any questions- krcarey@fcps.edu.
We hope that you can join us!
Sincerely,
Veronica Del Bagno, Principal

Library News!

We had a wonderful author visit with Josh Funk this week. He met with students K-6 and shared some of his books, talked to us about how long it takes to make a book (over 1,000 days!), gave us a preview of his upcoming book Dino Door that releases on May 5th, and even had students create their own characters to write about. We had a fantastic time and students really enjoyed it! A huge thank you to the PTA for helping to fund his visit and thank you to the families who ordered books for him to sign and supported our local bookstore, Scrawl Books!
Next week is the last week of National School Library Month! There is an optional spirit day on Thursday, April 30th for students to dress up as their favorite book character! No masks or weapons please. We can’t wait to see the creativity!
Parent Input for Class Placements 2026–2027
As we begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year at Rolling Valley Elementary School, we welcome your input as part of our class placement process. Creating balanced and supportive classroom communities is a thoughtful process that includes multiple perspectives. We carefully consider each child’s learning needs, peer dynamics, and the overall composition of each class to ensure a strong start for all students.
If there is information about your child that you feel would be helpful for our team to consider, particularly related to learning style or classroom environment, you are invited to share that input by emailing Veronica Del Bagno at vdelbagno@fcps.edu.
Please submit responses by Friday, May 22.

Smart Watch - Reminder
This is a friendly reminder about student use of Smart Watches during the school day. Recently, we have seen an increase in students using their watches to contact home when they are not feeling well or engaging in back and forth messaging during instructional time. To support a focused learning environment and consistent communication practices, we ask for your partnership in following the expectations outlined in our 2025–2026 Parent Handbook.
If your child wears a Smart Watch to school, it must be set to airplane mode or disconnected from the internet while they are in the building. Students should not be using watches to communicate during the school day. If a student is not feeling well, our staff is always here to help along with access to our clinic and will contact you as needed.
Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a safe and distraction free learning environment.

Camp Details:
Spartan Volleyball Camp is designed and has a session for athletes of all skill levels who are eager to enhance their game in a challenging and supportive environment. Camp sessions are structured by age and skill level to ensure every player receives personalized instruction and the best opportunity for growth.
Campers will have the unique opportunity to train with experienced high school coaches from across the country, as well as current college athletes. Campers in Session A and B will also get to work with the high school athletes from the Virginia State Champions team! Sessions will include individual skill development, group instruction, and competitive tournament play, all designed to help players refine their technique, build confidence, and elevate their overall performance.
Session C is ONLY for advanced players. Unfortunately, we do not have a session for rising 10th-12th graders who are new to volleyball or who only have freshmen team level experience and/or rec volleyball experience. Athletes attending Session C must have played on their high school Varsity or JV team or are currently playing on a competitive club team. If you are signing up for Session C, the expectation is that you are playing volleyball at or close to the Varsity level. Most rising 9th graders should be attending session B.
