"Iran can never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. That is the goal of this operation and President Trump will see it through to completion." These were the words of US Vice President JD Vance on the X social media platform on 3 March.
But according to three sources familiar with the matter, US intelligence assessments of Tehran's nuclear program remain broadly unchanged even after two months of a war that Donald Trump launched in part to stop the Islamic Republic from developing a nuclear bomb.
US officials, including Trump, repeatedly cite the need to eliminate Iran's nuclear program as a key objective of the war.
