The raised beds along the southern wall really are the best spot for the tomatoes and peppers since they need full sun all day. I checked the soil composition last weekend and it is a little heavy on clay so we should mix in some compost and sand before planting. The herbs can go right by the kitchen door so you can grab them easily while cooking. You asked about carrots and they do need loose sandy soil so that bed needs extra preparation. For the paths between beds I am leaning toward cedar chips because they smell great and block weeds well. The raspberry bushes should be trained along the fence so they have support. I also want to put a small bench under the big oak tree where you can sit in the mornings. I found a solid cedar bench at the hardware store that would fit perfectly there. Let me know if you want to adjust the layout before I start digging this weekend.

The chicken coop design we discussed is really going to work well for your backyard. I measured the space and an 8 by 6 foot coop gives the hens plenty of room to roost and move around comfortably. The nesting boxes should face north so they stay cooler in summer and we can access them from outside without entering the run. I found a great source for reclaimed lumber at the salvage yard near downtown which will keep costs down. For the roof I suggest corrugated metal panels because they last a long time and shed rain easily. The run needs to be enclosed with hardware cloth rather than standard chicken wire since that keeps out raccoons and other predators. I think six hens would be a good starting number for your family given how many eggs you want for baking. We can always add more later if needed. The whole project should take about two weekends once we have everything gathered.
