I tried that new ramen spot on Elm Street last night and honestly it caught me off guard. The broth was richer than I expected and they had these crispy rice crackers on the side that added just the right crunch. I ordered the spicy miso and by the third slurp I could feel the heat building but it never overwhelmed the flavor. The soft-boiled egg was perfect — jammy center, not too runny. My friend got the tantanmen and said it reminded her of the bowls we used to share back in college. We ended up staying way longer than planned just talking about nothing really — music we had been listening to, that weird dream she had last week, whether we should try painting as a hobby. The waitress was super patient even though we lingered for almost an hour after finishing. I will definitely go back maybe even this week if I can fit it in. It is one of those places that feels special but not pretentious. They also have a matcha soft serve that I want to try next time.

Hey have you been following that new documentary series about the history of cartography I started it last night and honestly I did not expect to get so hooked. The way they talk about how ancient explorers pieced together coastlines using nothing but guesswork and dead reckoning is wild. I learned that some of the earliest portolan charts had these intricate rhumb lines radiating from multiple centers and sailors used them for navigation long before longitude was even a thing. The episode also covered the Hereford Mappa Mundi which is this massive medieval map that centers on Jerusalem and has all sorts of mythical creatures drawn in the margins. Apparently it was meant more as a theological statement than a practical tool. My favorite part though was about the Fra Mauro map from the 1450s which was incredibly accurate for its time and even showed Japan decades before Europeans actually got there. I am only two episodes in and there are six total so I think I will try to watch another one tonight. If you are into history or geography even a little I bet you would like it too. The narration is calm and measured and the visuals are mostly old manuscripts and reenactments shot in low light which gives it a really moody feel.
