Read today's e-Newspaper

Good Tuesday morning. It’ll be partly cloudy with a high of 93.

In today’s edition, read about what's going on with Alligator Alcatraz; St. Petersburg’s Noble Tavern; and a Clearwater Garden Avenue petition.

This rare Gulf whale was a thorn in Big Oil’s side. Then feds slashed protections

Scientists believe there are only about 50 Rice’s whales left in the world, swimming in the Gulf of Mexico near Florida’s coasts.

One major threat to their survival? The influence of the oil industry. After years of corporate lobbying, the federal government is rolling back protections for the animals at a rapid pace.

Our reporters dug deep into these lobbying efforts — and uncovered something surprising about a research paper the government has been citing as rationale to slash whale protections.

• Offshore Tampa Bay may be a key whale shark feeding ground. Have you seen them?

Congressional map upended: Tampa Bay is home to one of the most competitive U.S. House races in the country after redistricting. Here's what we're watching as the midterm elections draw closer.

Baseball is a big topic: Florida lawmakers could give Hillsborough College $50 million as the Rays eye the campus as their new stadium site.

Moving out: Advocates and attorneys say a sudden increase in activity around detainees at Alligator Alcatraz suggests the Florida center could be closing. Plans for a new immigration detention center in the Panhandle are on hold, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

SPORTS

Chat with Rays CEO: Ken Babby says there's still work to do to resolve issues, but the ownership group remains confident a Tampa stadium deal will get done.

Wander Franco trial: The ruling is similar to the Rays shortstop's original trial in 2025 but includes a judicial pardon that eliminates potential punishment. The full judgment, with more details, is scheduled to be read in court on June 16.

What’s the deal with Noble Tavern?

The latest restaurant from the team behind Noble Crust appears to be perpetually packed, while attempting to do a lot of things all at once, our food and dining critic writes. It’s a wide-reaching approach, and not all of it works. But there’s still a lot of fun to be had at this buzzy spot. Read the full review.
