Support our nonprofit journalism

Bari Weiss' tumultuous reign at CBS News continues apace. The latest victim? Beloved journalist and 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, who was fired Tuesday night after criticizing Weiss' leadership in a heated, much-publicized meeting with the show's new executive producer, Nick Bilton. (Bilton was handpicked by CBS News and has no experience in broadcast TV.) As my colleague Alex Nguyen writes:

Though Pelley refused to do so, he said network leadership allowed politicians to pick their own interviewers—“giving politicians control” and destroying the broadcast’s integrity.

Pelley's ouster is the latest in a series of moves under Weiss that have been widely seen as efforts to court the Trump administration, as Paramount, the company that owns CBS, awaits federal approval for its bid to take over Warner Bros. It also has me returning to our own CEO's obituary of CBS News, and why we should support nonprofit independent newsrooms.
