Lately, when deciding what to listen to, I find myself looking for podcast episodes that make me feel hopeful. Stories that remind me how resourceful, interesting and cool people can be. Stories that leave me inspired, and excited about the future.
This episode from KPBS’ The Finest knocks it out of the park. It’s the story of the rise and fall (and rise?) of San Diego’s electric rail system, which used to crisscross the city. If you love public transit (same) you’re really in for a treat, but even if you’re not a transit head there’s a lot to sink your teeth into.
For example, I did a double-take when I heard that the rail system was actually built by real estate developers, who were trying to make far-out neighborhoods more appealing to homebuyers. That was well over a hundred years ago, but today those same neighborhoods are some of the most desirable in the city, in part because they were built -- not for cars -- but for pedestrians and light rail.
Do I live in San Diego? No. Will I ever? Probably not! But I love thinking about how our physical environments shape us and our communities. I feel hopeful because people 100 years ago prioritized community building in a way that makes fighting for public transit less of an uphill battle today. It’s totally cool if your dream includes life in a suburb and an SUV, but I’m over here daydreaming about a life without a car, in a neighborhood close to my friends and hopefully -- a train station. I’m rooting for you, San Diego!
Dream big,
