I think the raised bed approach is the way to go for your backyard. The soil there is fairly compacted and drainage has been an issue in the past. Building three beds around four by eight feet should give enough room for vegetables and herbs without taking up too much space. I can pick up the lumber this weekend and we could assemble them on Saturday. Cedar would last longer but pine would work if we treat it properly. We will need roughly twelve cubic feet of soil mix per bed. I will calculate the exact amount once we finalize the dimensions. Let me know if you want to adjust the size or move them to a different spot. I am happy to help with the whole process from framing to filling. We could also add a simple drip irrigation system if you are interested. It would make watering much easier during the warmer months. I have some extra landscape fabric we can use underneath to prevent weeds. Let me know what you think about the plan and we can get started next week.
I also looked into the cost of soil and supplies and it is very reasonable. The local garden center has a good mix specifically for raised beds. I can swing by and grab what we need after we finalize the measurements. Just let me know if Saturday morning works for you or if you prefer a different time.

I have been coordinating with a few neighbors about the community garden idea and Saturday the 15th seems to work for most people. We plan to start at 9 AM and finish by early afternoon. I will bring basic tools and some seeds to get things going. If you have any extra trowels or gloves, those would be helpful. We will focus on the plots along the fence line and near the shed. Afterward, I was thinking we could grab coffee together to discuss next steps. Let me know if you can make it and if you have suggestions for other areas we should prepare. I think we should also designate a small section for herbs since several people expressed interest in growing basil and mint. The soil in the back corner might need some amendment before we plant. I can bring a bag of compost to mix in. I will send a reminder a couple of days before so everyone has time to prepare. It should be a productive morning and a good chance to get to know the neighbors better. Let me know if you have any questions about what to bring or if you want to adjust the timing.
