Ostomy patients fear limited access to supplies

Thousands of Floridians rely on ostomy bags to maintain their quality life after issues with their digestive or urinary tracts require surgeries that disrupt their normal functions. That is the case for Lisa Donovon.

After having her colon removed a few years back, Donovon began wearing an ostomy bag. The pouches attach to the abdomen and catch stool and urine that would otherwise spill from her body. The bags are worn seamlessly under clothing, and are often undetectable.

But the supplies are not one-size-fits-all, and getting the right fit matters for preventing infections or embarrassing leaks.

Patients like Donovon worry that pending changes to Medicare could affect their access to the supplies they rely on to live healthily — and happily.

Here’s what you should know.

AROUND THE BAY (AND FLORIDA)

Increase to 12: The Supreme Court could end six-person juries. For Florida, it’d be a seismic shift.

Nearing 10,000 solar projects funded: Climate First Bank, headquartered in St. Petersburg, markets itself as the first FDIC-insured community bank dedicated to combatting the climate crisis.

Engine problems: A small plane emergency landed in the water off Honeymoon Island on Sunday. No one was injured.

Just after midnight: Two men were injured early Monday in a shooting at a downtown Clearwater sports bar.

Final defendant's fate: A 21-year-old was sentenced to 45 years in prison after a jury decided he was guilty of manslaughter, not murder, in the 2022 death of a Clearwater Beach bicyclist.

Again? Hundreds of travelers who had arrived on overseas flights to Orlando International Airport stood around for hours waiting for their luggage.

Supporting Ybor City seniors: Quest, a local nonprofit that empowers adults with developmental disabilities to live more independent lives, joined forces with Meals on Wheels to deliver freshly prepared meals to homebound seniors.

Christmas in July? It’s never too early to be jolly. Check out this week’s events in Tampa Bay.
