Today’s newsletter is brought to you in association with Pugpig. Its 2026 Media App Report, combining analytics from more than 440 apps across 140 publishers with survey responses from publishing professionals across the industry, is available to download now. 🤖 LLMs may base their business models on stolen content – but there is no escaping the fact that they are incredibly good at using all that copyrighted material. Top future of media boffin Nic Newman has outlined the scale of the challenge facing publishers posed by the likes of Claude which he praises for “remixing” what he calls “liquid content” into exactly the form users want it. Soon readers will be asking LLMs to summarise their favourite newsletters into personalised podcasts, he said. Newman set out what publishers need to do to survive, including focusing on things the LLMs can’t replicate: like audio, video and distinctive investigations. 👑 Today we also publish a special extended edition of our podcast looking at the fallout of the Prince Harry and others privacy case. It includes an interview with media lawyer Louis Charalambous who told me Harry was incredibly ill-advised to issue what he described as a misleading statement, impugning the integrity of the judge and describing his 436-page judgment as a whitewash. Former Daily Mail showbiz editor Nicole Lampert spoke about the terrifying ordeal of having her reputation put on trial on the basis of zero evidence. At one point “desperate” claimants’ lawyer David Sherborne even accused her of hacking the Metropolitan Police, prompting the trial judge to step in. 🪓 And Sherwood News, the US business outlet launched by retail trading platform Robinhood, is closing with the loss of around nine jobs. The site launched in 2024 with ambitions to provide “actionable, illuminating news on the markets, business, tech and culture of money”. |
