Dear subscriber, If you received this email, it’s because you’ve been following Off Message for several months, or in some cases years. First and foremost: Thank you. As a gesture of gratitude, I want to extend the biggest discount I’ve ever offered. This newsletter is what I do for a living, but it’s also a calling. I wouldn’t keep doing it if I was unable to reach a wide audience—because without readers, news and ideas get drowned out by more effective attention seekers. I want what I publish here to have an impact, and it wouldn’t have an impact with a paid subscribership alone. But I’ve also endeavored to understand why Off Message has been able to attract such a huge audience of free subscribers (now over 200,000) relative to its audience of paid subscribers (just a hair under 5,000). And the message that comes back loudest and clearest is: price, price, price. I can’t count the number of readers who’ve told me something like this: I understand why a regular subscription here costs $7 a month, but it’s not feasible for me to keep up with all the writers I like on Substack when they’re all charging somewhere between $5 (the Substack minimum) and $10. I hear you. It’s a problem I’ve encountered, too—and not only is this my job, I also get to write off subscriptions as business expenses! Nevertheless, I still can’t subscribe to every newsletter I’d like to. So I’m thinking about novel ways to solve that problem. This sale brings the price of Off Message down from $7 per month to $2.45, and from $75 per year to just $26.25. And the discount lasts for a full year. All you have to do is click one of these buttons or links and sign up by the end of the day Sunday, and you’ll be locked in well through the midterm elections (and whatever challenges they confront us with), into next year, when we can hopefully begin in earnest the process of re-democratizing the country. I know others of you have different reasons for wanting to limit your subscriptions, accounts, and recurring charges. I’m a bit more limited in my ability to address your concerns, but if you want to support this mission in some small way, you can pay what you’re able to in the form of a donation. Whatever option you choose, thank you sincerely for your support. It means everything. Brian |
