This week our community has been grieving the death of Toowoomba mother Jana Armstrong. The 30-year-old was allegedly murdered by her ex-partner Dharminder Singh on July 7. Our news team has been following the case, speaking with Ms Armstrong's family and friends and keeping our audience up-to-date with the police investigation. While the matter is now before the courts, the community has rallied to show their support for Ms Armstrong's family, including donating goods to help care for her four-month-old baby. The whole ABC Southern Queensland team has worked tirelessly to deliver the story with care and compassion, as the topic of domestic violence made national headlines once again.
In other news, I jumped in the car for a driving lesson with You Belong, a local refugee support group providing those wanting to get driving lessons the chance to get their hours up. Grace Nakamura chatted all things housing with Toowoomba broker Katie Norbury. Keep an eye out for a story the team is working on about how first home buyers are thriving in the market at the moment.
The Breakfast and Morning radio team has been bringing you stories about NAIDOC celebrations. Kemii Maguire spoke with Gomeroi artist Melinda Luscombe about what inspires her, while David Illiffe chatted with Wattle Warriors secretary Emily Henry ahead of the TRL Indigenous round over the weekend.
We've also welcomed our new acting editor Nicholas McElroy this week. He'll be with us for the next few months, helping the team to continue to deliver stories that matter most to you. Keep an eye out for next week's newsletter for more from him.
Don't forget to keep an eye on the ABC Southern Qld Facebook page for all the light and the shade of your local news.
Until next week,
Aisling Brennan
