Hi ala,
Continuing our summer road trip!
I spent most of last weekend at a conference listening to a plethora of speakers, and checking out the service providers, podcasters and more in the tabletop exhibit area. I also met up with several Innovation Women members! (Hello! Surprise!)
The good news is that I didn't have to travel far. The event was local and all I had to do was drive to the nearby train station, park and I was magically whisked into Boston. Hardly counts as a road trip, does it?
But I had actually traveled far from my usual stomping grounds. I was attending a speak-to-sell event.
There are three basic types of speakers:
-
Visibility speakers (who may have a product or service that you can buy, and subtly let you know but still deliver educational value onstage)
-
Professional (paid) speakers (who get paid for delivering content and entertainment
-
Speak-to-sell speakers (who deliver a sales pitch from the stage)
For the most part, Innovation Women works with visibility speakers and professional speakers. Many of the conferences and events who come to us for speakers issue dire warnings about pitches.
So why was I at a speak-to-sell event?
To network. To connect. To learn. There are tactics and techniques we can use that come to us from the world of S2S. And, I'll be sharing S2S insights today at Speaker Friend Friday.
Even if it's "not my thing", there is still value to be had. What was the last thing you traveled far (literally or figuratively) to learn?
Bobbie and the entire Innovation Women team
