It’s been true for nearly two decades. Each new Christopher Nolan film tends to be a big, newsworthy moviegoing event, accompanied by months of speculation and all sorts of advance buzz. And the scale of the anticipation somehow seems to get bigger with each movie. So now we have The Odyssey, perhaps the director’s biggest, most ambitious picture. Which means it’s time to update our ranking of Nolan’s oeuvre.

The sophomore effort from L.A. pop-folkie (and J.J. scion) Gracie Abrams, is the work of a grippingly expressive singer-songwriter whose literary theatrics are starting to seem like a signature. She’s going through it, announcing she’d prefer being hit by a train to being dumped, but the campfire pop floats downstream of Taylor Swift to a point that Folklore guests Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon return for cozy, manicured, rustic noise not half as unique to this artist as the unbridled lyrical turbulence.
