Something fundamental has shifted in attacker tradecraft, and most SOC playbooks have not caught up. Autonomous and semi-autonomous tooling built on frontier language models is now capable of running reconnaissance, vulnerability chaining, credential theft, and privilege escalation as one continuous, machine-driven sequence. The window between initial compromise and privileged access, once measured in days or hours of manual work, is collapsing into minutes.

That compression breaks a core assumption baked into most enterprise defenses: that there is time to observe, correlate, and respond. When an agentic attacker can move from a public-facing exploit to domain-level privilege before an analyst finishes triaging the first alert, periodic authentication, standing entitlements, and log-based detection stop functioning as controls in any meaningful sense. They become evidence collected after the fact, describing an incident that is already over.

Identity is where this collision is happening first. Standing privileges, unmonitored service accounts, unenforced MFA on legacy protocols, long-lived credentials, and stale entitlements are the exact weaknesses that AI-accelerated attacks probe and chain within minutes, and they sit largely outside the visibility of endpoint and network controls.
