The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reopened the public comment period for its Request for Information on butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) in human food and as a food contact substance.
As part of the FDA’s systematic process for conducting post-market assessments of chemicals in food, the agency published a notice in the Federal Register on May 13, 2026, requesting information on the current uses and safety data for BHT in human food and as a food contact substance. Earlier this month, the FDA announced its intention to reopen the comment period for 30 days to provide additional time for interested parties to compile and submit relevant data, scientific information, and comments. The comment period is open, and the new deadline to submit comments is August 31, 2026. For additional information, see the Federal Register notice announcing the reopening of the comment period.
Electronic comments may be submitted to www.regulations.gov docket number FDA-2026-N-2526.
