Rooted in the ideals and principles of the social reform movement, utopianism emerged from the fringes of society in the 19th century as idealistic communes, colonies, and settlements sprang up across the United States. In 1856, in the newly established territory of Kansas, vegetarian visionary Henry S. Clubb established his own version of utopia with the formation his meat-free, anti-slavery settlement dubbed Octagon City.
