Well, hello, August.
The calendar has flipped a month, campaign signs have multiplied across lawns and street corners, and Alaska’s Aug. 18 primary election is now 15 days away.
Just 15 days. That is the blink of an eye when you are trying to parse the names of 17 different gubernatorial hopefuls. The governor’s race is just the warm-up, though. We also have the field for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House and a Legislature where 50 of the 60 seats are currently on the line.
It’s a lot to take in, and if you are one of those people who haven’t quite made your mind up on a candidate, we’re here to help you sort it all out. Coming this week to ADN.com are candidate Q&As featuring the hopefuls in the statewide primary election. The project is a collaboration among the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska Public Media, the Alaska Beacon and KTOO.
We’ll publish responses from participating candidates in the races for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and the Legislature. That’s a lot of candidates, a lot of questions and, presumably, a lot of carefully polished answers. Keep in mind that some candidates opted not to participate in the Q&A but each was afforded the opportunity.
The Q&A is your chance to look beyond the campaign slogans and the glossy mailers and see who answered questions, who dodged issues, and who seems to understand the job they are applying for.
The primary will be here faster than you think, and this is the time when the political volume knob gets cranked up to 10. Check out the candidate Q&As coming this week, get informed, and then let me know what you think at letters@adn.com or go online and use our web form.
