In June 1876, a young Alexander Graham Bell arrived at Philadelphia’s Centennial Exhibition to demonstrate his telephone. Visitors may easily have passed by Bell’s telephone without noticing it, but the impression of the nation’s burgeoning industrial power was unmistakable.
