Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 novel The Shards is a tragedy, an autofiction imaginarium of ’80s excess in which a serial killer and a murderous cult plague Ellis’s senior year of high school. The book is like if The Great Gatsby were a giallo and features some of the scariest scenes I’ve ever read; that mélange of melancholy nostalgia and overwhelming dread makes it one of Ellis’s best novels. Ryan Murphy’s 2026 FX series The Shards, however, is a tragedy of adaptation.
