Note from the NSES Administration Team
 Dear North Springfield Community,
The countdown is nearly over as school finally opens this Monday, August 24! As we begin North Springfield Elementary School’s 70th anniversary year, we are filled with excitement and gratitude. Thank you to everyone who joined us for Beaver Blastoff on August 21, as well as our PreK and PAC Open House events from earlier in the week. It was wonderful to welcome so many families into the building and begin this special year together. We are also excited to begin our first year as an AAP center, launch Elementary AVID in second grade, and continue our commitment to students’ academic and social growth.
Please remember that this year’s bell schedule begins and ends 10 minutes later than in previous years. The building will open at 8:35 a.m., rather than 8:25 a.m., and dismissal will be at 3:40 p.m., rather than 3:30 p.m. We will also have additional buses supporting arrival and dismissal for students in our 3rd grade AAP Center program. During the first few weeks, families should plan for extra time as bus routes are finalized and our community becomes familiar with the new schedule. We look forward to partnering with you for a wonderful school year!

The first day of school for K-5th and PAC, Monday, August 24, is a few days away! Check out these back-to-school tips to make sure your child gets off to a great start. The first day of school for PreK and ECCB is Thursday, August 27.

Please be patient and show grace to all of our FCPS employees as we want to ensure a successful first day, week, and year for all of our students and families.
- If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report.
- Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays.
- Contact the Transportation Office at 703-249-7000 with any additional questions.
- For any concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
- To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

As summer winds down, we are looking forward to welcoming students back to our classrooms. Use the following list to help make sure your child is ready!
☑️ Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE
Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Contact our registrar, Diana Tjio, at dmtjio@fcps.edu or 703-658-5500 if you need an activation code. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.
Update Your Contact Information
Be sure you receive important information! Update your phone number(s) and/or email address(es) by clicking “My Account” and reviewing the “Online Verification/Update.” On that form, you can also update immunization records, health information, and emergency contacts.
☑️ Update Immunizations and Records
Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy.
When your child is immunized, remember to request a copy of their immunization record and bring that to our front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website.
☑️ Learn About School Meals
Families need to provide their children with money to purchase meals at school or send them with a packed lunch. Alternatively, families may apply to receive free and reduced-price meal benefits, pending approval.
☑️ Bookmark the School Year Calendar
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:
- Days marked blue with an “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
- Days marked orange with an “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings, if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
- Days marked as TW, SD, and SP and in pink are holidays for students but working days for teachers and staff.
Please note that some holidays and observances, such as Eid al Fitr, may shift, and the calendar may be adjusted.
The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Early release Wednesdays will start in late September. Each elementary school in Fairfax County will have four of these early release days throughout the school year, and lunch will be provided. Learn more and view dates for early release Wednesdays. The school day will end at 12:40PM on Early Release Wednesdays at North Springfield ES.

- Families are encouraged to review the updated FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document, which explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses in order to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Updates for the 2026-27 school year include new Universal Grade Matrices (UGMs). UGMs are charts that show behavior expectations and school responses by grade level (K-3, 4-8, and 9-12). These at-a-glance resources (in Appendix D of the SR&R) are designed to make it easier for parents and caregivers to understand how schools respond to different types of behavior concerns.

The NSES PTA is a fantastic way to get involved and connect with other Beaver families! We encourage you to join the PTA and attend meetings throughout the year. We also have a variety of volunteer opportunities available, so please reach out to nsespta@gmail.com and let them know if you're able to share your time and talents! The PTA coordinates community events as well as fundraising to support some of our most popular projects and initiatives!
